Melamine powder is a thermosetting plastic. This means that once formed under high temperature and pressure, it permanently solidifies and cannot be melted and reshaped. This gives melamine tableware its durability and resistance to deformation.

Pure melamine resin is colorless and transparent. The melamine tableware of various colors and patterns that we see in daily life is made by adding color paste, pigment and decorative paper during the production process.

    Raw materials and safety

    The safety of melamine tableware depends entirely on the purity of the raw materials and the standardization of the production process.

    Qualified products:

    Made of pure melamine resin (A5 or A1 material), produced under standardized processes, with a stable chemical structure, will not release formaldehyde or melamine under normal use conditions (especially -20°C to 120°C), and are safe.

    Unqualified products (inferior products):

    1. Using inferior raw materials:

    Some unscrupulous vendors use urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin to impersonate or mix it with melamine resin. UF resin is very low-cost, but it has poor chemical stability and easily releases formaldehyde when heated (especially when used to hold hot food), posing a serious health hazard.

    2. Substandard process:

    If the reaction is incomplete or the curing is insufficient, it may also cause the migration of residual monomers.

    How to distinguish between good and bad

    1. Look at the price: Be wary of abnormally low prices.

    2. Smell: Use hot water to scald it. If there is a pungent smell, it is likely to be a low-quality product (containing urea-formaldehyde resin).

    3. Touch feel: High-quality melamine tableware feels smooth, thick, and has a hard texture; inferior products may feel light and rough.

    4. Look at the label: Look for the QS or SC production license mark, and the "MF" material mark to avoid buying products without the "three labels".

    Question1Are melamine powder and urea-formaldehyde resin powder the same thing? Can they be used interchangeably?

    Completely different and absolutely irreplaceable.

    Melamine powder (melamine formaldehyde resin): Food contact grade products meet the requirements of temperature resistance (-30°C to 120°C) and low migration. Their safety complies with standards such as GB 4806.7, making them a suitable raw material for compliant melamine tableware.

    Urea-formaldehyde resin powder: Lower cost, but poor water and temperature resistance (easily decomposes above 80°C), and will continuously release formaldehyde. It is prohibited from use in food contact scenarios - some inferior "imitation melamine tableware" will use urea-formaldehyde resin to impersonate, posing serious health risks.

     

    Question2Is food-grade melamine powder toxic? Does it release formaldehyde?

    Compliant food-grade melamine powder is non-toxic and will not release formaldehyde under normal use:

    Raw material standards: The resin purity of food-grade melamine powder must be ≥95%. Additives (colorants, release agents) must meet food contact grade requirements (such as EU No. 10/2011 and China GB 4806.7). They must pass the "Migration of Hazardous Substances" test before leaving the factory.

    Release conditions: Formaldehyde can only be decomposed and released when subjected to long-term high temperatures exceeding 120°C (such as open flame heating or oven baking) or when "raw materials are unqualified" (such as industrial-grade melamine powder or urea-formaldehyde resin as substitutes).

     

    Question3Will cleaning melamine tableware damage the structure of the melamine powder? What should I pay attention to?

    Improper cleaning will damage the melamine resin layer on the surface of the tableware, exposing the raw materials and making it easy for bacteria to grow. When cleaning, please pay attention to the following:

    Do not use steel wool or hard brush to wipe vigorously (it will scratch the surface and expose the internal filler);

    Avoid long-term soaking in strong acid/alkaline cleaners (such as concentrated vinegar, industrial caustic soda) (this will accelerate resin aging and cracking);

    It is recommended to use a soft cloth + neutral detergent to clean, the water temperature is ≤80℃, and dry it promptly after cleaning.

     

    Question4Melamine tableware will turn yellow and crack after long-term use. Is it because the melamine powder has deteriorated?

    It is not necessarily "deterioration", but is more related to usage habits:

    Yellowing: Long-term contact with oil, high temperature (such as repeated soaking in boiling water), or incomplete cleaning leads to pigmentation. This is normal aging and does not affect safety (as long as there is no odor or cracking);

    Cracking: This is mostly caused by "sudden temperature changes" (such as immediately putting cold water into a container after filling it with boiling hot soup) or "long-term over-temperature use" (such as heating with an open flame), which damages the resin structure. It is recommended to replace this type of tableware to avoid the migration of harmful substances.

     

    Question5Can melamine powder be recycled and reused?

    Recycling is not recommended for food contact scenarios:

    Thermosetting properties: Melamine powder is "irreversibly solidified" after molding and cannot be melted and reshaped like plastic. It needs to be crushed for recycling, but the performance of the crushed powder (such as temperature resistance and toughness) will be greatly reduced;

    Safety risks: Impurities (such as oil and bacteria) may be mixed in during the recycling process, and there is no guarantee that the migration of harmful substances meets food-grade standards. Therefore, compliant tableware manufacturers all use new food-grade melamine powder in production.
